Ahead of Tuesday night’s game against the Chicago White Sox, the Toronto Blue Jays announced a pair of moves in their bullpen.
The team reinstated Chad Green from the injured list after the 33-year-old made three rehab starts with triple-A Buffalo. His last outing came Saturday when he pitched a scoreless inning while allowing one hit.
He had been on the injured list since April 20 with a right teres major strain. He began the season with a 2.35 ERA and two saves through seven appearances for the Blue Jays before being shut down with the injury.
In the corresponding move to make room on the roster, Toronto optioned Erik Swanson to triple-A. Swanson was one of Toronto’s most reliable relievers in 2023 but has struggled so far this season.
According to MLB.com’s Keegan Matheson, Blue Jays manager John Schneider met with Swanson last night to inform him of the decision.
“The decision is just about performance,” Schneider said pre-game. “He’s obviously not happy but we need him back.”
Swanson got a delayed start in 2024 after his son was hit by a car during spring training and he went on the injured list to begin the regular season.
Matheson said that Schneider noted Swanson’s injury and son’s accident when discussing the demotion.
The 30-year-old right-hander has a 9.22 ERA and 10 strikeouts over 13.2 innings. Swanson has allowed five home runs, including a solo shot to White Sox designated hitter Gavin Sheets in Monday afternoon’s win.
In 2023, Swanson had a 2.97 ERA over a career-high 66.2 innings, mixing in four saves.
