The Boston Bruins are locking up one of their young blue-liners before he hits restricted free agency.

Boston has agreed to a two-year, $6.4 million contract extension with defenceman Mason Lohrei, the team announced Monday.

Lohrei was set to become a restricted free agent with his two-year entry-level contract expiring on July 1.

The 24-year-old had an up-and-down first full year with the Bruins, tallying five goals and 28 assists in 77 games — all career-highs. He ranked second on the Bruins in power-play points with 16 and led all Boston defencemen in assists, points and power-play points.

However, the six-foot-five d-man finished with the worst plus-minus in the NHL at -43.

The native of Baton Rouge, La. was originally selected by the Bruins 58th overall in the 2020 NHL Draft out of Ohio State University.
