Canadiens sign Mike Matheson to five-year, $30M contract extension

NHL insider Elliotte Friedman joins The FAN Hockey Show to discuss why he thinks the Mike Matheson extension in Montreal was a no-brainer, and a win-win-win everywhere, also discusses whether he sees any holes on the Canadiens' current roster.

Mike Matheson will remain with the Montreal Canadiens for the foreseeable future.

The team announced Friday that the defenceman has signed a five-year, $30-million contract extension that runs through the 2030-31 season and carries a cap hit of $6 million.

Currently in his fourth season with Montreal, Matheson has four goals and 10 assists in 22 games. The 31-year-old leads the Canadiens in average ice time at 24:50 per game, which ranks 10th in the NHL.

A native of Pointe-Claire, Que., Matheson set numerous career highs with the Canadiens during the 2023-24 season, including assists (51), points (62), power-play goals (5) and power-play points (28). He also matched a personal best with 11 goals that year.

Across 649 career NHL games with the Canadiens, Pittsburgh Penguins and Florida Panthers, he has recorded a total of 279 points (78 goals and 201 assists).

Drafted 23rd overall by the Panthers in 2012, Matheson was traded to Montreal by Pittsburgh along with a fourth-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft for Jeff Petry and Ryan Poehling on July 16, 2022.
