The Montreal Canadiens are trading one of their pending restricted free agents.

The team is trading the negotiating rights to goaltender Cayden Primeau to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for a seventh-round pick in 2026, the Canadiens announced on Monday.

The Canadiens extended a qualifying offer to Primeau earlier on Monday.

The 25-year-old backup goaltender appeared in 11 games in 2024-25 and split time between Montreal and AHL Laval. In his NHL appearances, Primeau recorded a .836 save percentage and 4.70 goals-against average.

The Farmington Hills, Mich. native improved his numbers in 26 AHL games with the Laval Rocket, recording a .927 save percentage and 1.96 goals-against average.

Primeau was selected 199th overall by the Canadiens at the 2017 NHL Draft.
