The Washington Capitals are down to five defencemen — at least for the time being.

Off-season acquisition Jakob Chychrun is day-to-day after sustaining an upper-body injury Tuesday against the New York Rangers.

Though it’s unclear how he suffered the injury, he left the ice early in the first period and appeared to be clutching his lower back area.

The 26-year-old has played in all seven games this season for the Capitals prior to Tuesday night, potting two goals and two assists. He was traded to Washington by the Ottawa Senators during the 2024 off-season in exchange for Nick Jensen.

Chychrun spent the majority of his career with the Arizona Coyotes, spending the first seven seasons of his NHL tenure in the desert, before he was traded to Ottawa ahead of the 2023 trade deadline.

In 474 career games, the Boca Raton, Fla., native has 78 goals and 220 points.
