The Miami Dolphins may have to make their last-ditch stab at a playoff spot without their starting quarterback.

Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel told reporters Monday that Tua Tagovailoa’s status for Sunday’s game against the New York Jets is “firmly in the unknown.”

Tagovailoa missed this past Sunday’s win over the Cleveland Browns with a hip injury. Tyler Huntley filled in, running for one touchdown and passing for another.

McDaniel said Huntley will get the majority of the practice reps to start this week.

The Dolphins (8-8) need to beat the Jets and have the Denver Broncos lose to the Kansas City Chiefs to make the playoffs for a third year in a row.

Tagovailoa also missed four games earlier this season with a concussion.

Huntley, signed by the Dolphins earlier this season off the Baltimore Ravens practice roster, is 2-2 as a starter this year.
