Longtime forward Craig Smith retires from NHL

Craig Smith is hanging up his skates.

The longtime NHL forward announced his retirement from the NHL on Monday after 987 regular-season games.

Smith, of Madison, Wisc., last suited up for the Chicago Blackhawks and Detroit Red Wings last season, tallying 16 points (nine goals, seven assists) in 59 games.

He finishes his career with 452 points, including 220 goals and 232 assists. He added nine goals and 14 assists in 83 post-season games.

Smith, 36, was originally selected in the fourth round of the 2009 draft by the Nashville Predators before debuting with the team in 2011.

He went on to spend nine seasons with the franchise, scoring 20-plus goals five times and helping lead the Predators to their lone Stanley Cup Final appearance in 2017.

Smith then spent two-and-a-half seasons with the Boston Bruins before bouncing around the league, including stints with the Washington Capitals, Dallas Stars, Blackhawks and Red Wings.
