The New York Mets have traded outfielder Tommy Pham to the Arizona Diamondbacks, per ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
In exchange, the Mets receive 17-year-old shortstop prospect Jeremy Rodriguez.
Pham, a 10-year MLB veteran, now joins his fourth team over the past two seasons. After splitting the 2022 campaign between the Cincinnati Reds and Boston Red Sox, he signed a one-year, $6-million contract with the Mets in the off-season.
In New York, he has slashed .268/.348/.472 with 10 home runs, 36 RBI and 11 stolen bases and has been especially effective against left-handed pitching.
The 35-year-old has dealt with groin tightness over the past month, spending four days before the all-star break resting before returning to the lineup on July 14.
A 16th-round pick of the St. Louis Cardinals in 2006, Pham broke into the majors with the club in 2014. He has played in the postseason on three different occasions, with the Cardinals in 2015, the Tampa Bay Rays in 2019 and the San Diego Padres in 2020.
Pham was suspended three games in 2022 as a member of the Reds after slapping Joc Pederson of the San Francisco Giants in the face before a game. Pham said the dispute stemmed from an incident in a fantasy football league they were both part of.
In late 2020, Pham was stabbed in the back outside a San Diego strip club following a dispute. Pham, who needed 200 stitches, said he worried his playing career might be over after that incident.
