The Minnesota Wild have traded struggling power forward Jordan Greenway to the Buffalo Sabres for a 2023 second-round pick and a 2024 fifth-round pick, according to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.
The move allows the Wild to clear some cap space ahead of a crunch that is coming after the club bought out Zach Parise and Ryan Suter last year.
Greenway, six-foot-six, is in the first year of a three-year, $9-million contract but has made a minimal impact this season, scoring only two goals and seven points in 45 games.
The 26-year-old had 10 goals and 27 points in 2021-22.
The Wild are one of the few teams with cap space this season and have used it to help other teams facilitate trades — eating parts of Ryan O’Reilly and Dmitry Orlov’s salaries in exchange for draft picks. Minnesota remains in the hunt for a playoff spot in the Central Division along with the Dallas Stars, Winnipeg Jets and Colorado Avalanche.
