The San Jose Sharks will be without one of their top blue-liners for the next stretch.

Defenceman John Klingberg has been placed on the injured reserve, the team announced Monday.

In a corresponding move, forward Patrick Giles was recalled from AHL affiliate San Jose Barracuda.

According to Sheng Peng of San Jose Hockey Now and NBC Sports, Klingberg is dealing with a lower-body injury suffered in last week’s 4-3 shootout win over the Minnesota Wild.

It’s unclear how or when he suffered the injury, but he missed Saturday’s 7-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The 33-year-old has been a steady presence for the Sharks this season, tallying nine goals and seven assists for 31 points. His 21:37 of average ice-time a night is second on the Sharks behind fellow defenceman Dmitry Orlov.

Klingberg joined the Sharks on a one-year deal after going through injury-riddled campaigns with the Toronto Maple Leafs and Edmonton Oilers over the past two seasons.
