Stars’ Jamie Benn fined for roughing Jets’ Mark Scheifele

As the Winnipeg Jets held a 3-0 lead over the Dallas Stars in the dying minutes of Game 5, tempers began to flare between DAL's Jamie Benn and WPG's Mark Scheifele, leading to the Dallas captain being tossed and earning a game misconduct.

Jamie Benn‘s wallet is taking a hit after the Dallas Stars captain laid one on Mark Scheifele of the Winnipeg Jets.

Benn was fined $5,000, the maximum allowable under the CBA, for roughing Scheifele in Game 5 of their second-round series on Thursday night, the NHL’s Department of Player Safety announced Friday.

The incident occurred at the 13:28 mark of the third period. Following a scrum along the boards, Benn threw a punch at Scheifele.

Scheifele, who sustained a concussion earlier in the post-season, was being held back by linesman Ryan Daisy before the punch, and the two fell to the ice.

“It was hard for me to understand either. My face hurts. There’s not much I can really say in this situation…” Scheifele said about the punch on Friday. “Couldn’t really protect myself, my arms were pinned at my side, so definitely didn’t feel good.”

Benn was assessed a minor penalty for roughing and a 10-minute misconduct.

Scheifele and Jets teammate Brandon Tanev also received roughing penalties on the play, while Tanev was handed a misconduct.

The Jets went on to win the contest 4-0.

The Stars lead the series 3-2 with Game 6 set for Saturday at 8 p.m. ET / 7 p.m. CT on Sportsnet and Sportsnet+.
