The 33-year-old Smith had 16 points (nine goals, seven assists) in 64 games for the Washington Capitals and Boston Bruins last season.

Selected by the Nashville Predators in the fourth round (98th overall) of the 2009 NHL Draft, Smith has 414 points (200 goals, 214 assists) in 853 career games for the Capitals, Bruins and Predators.

“Craig brings a wealth of experience and leadership to our group,” Stars general manager Jim Nill said. “He’s a player we’ve been familiar with over the years, especially during his time in Nashville, and we’re looking forward to having him join our team.”
