WARSAW, Poland — Poland’s TVN24 reports Pope John Paul II’s former longtime secretary is giving to Polish Formula One driver Robert Kubica, who is recovering from a serious car crash.

Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz has given a medallion containing a fragment of a robe worn by the late Polish pope and a drop of his blood to Kubica, who is hospitalized in Italy after a rally crash last Sunday.

TVN24 television says Dziwisz gave the relics to one of their reporters in Rome on Friday and asked him to deliver them to Kubica. The driver has the pope’s picture by his bedside and keeps the pope’s name on his safety helmet.

Kubica comes from Krakow, in southern Poland, where Dziwisz is archbishop and where John Paul was archbishop before being elected pope. John Paul will be beatified on May 1.
