INDIANAPOLIS — Veteran driver John Andretti has crashed at practice for the Indianapolis 500, the third crash of the day.
Andretti, who had qualified at 221.109 m.p.h., was in danger of being bumped out of the lineup. So he was practising, trying to find more speed, when he lost control in turn one and hit the wall. He was not injured.
Graham Rahal, the 20-year-old son of former Indy winner Bobby Rahal, had to intentionally spin his car to avoid Andretti’s car.
Earlier Sunday, Indy rookies Mike Conway and Alex Tagliani of Lachenaie, Que., crashed in separate incidents. Conway was admitted to an Indianapolis hospital with bruised lungs.
Tagliani lost control in the same turn as Conway and hit the wall. Tagliani was released from the track hospital and cleared to drive.
