The Trident is returning to the track.

Maserati announced Tuesday it will compete in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship in 2023.

The Italian manufacturer’s move aligns with Formula E’s debut of the Gen3, which is heralded as the world’s most efficient race car.

In a statement, Maserati said the all-electric series is the “perfect platform” to resume its racing heritage as it continues its development of its Folgore brand featuring electric-powered vehicles.

“We are very proud to be back where we belong as protagonists in the world of racing,” Maserati CEO Davide Grasso said in a statement. “We are powered by passion and innovative by nature. We have a long history of world-class excellence in competition and we are ready to drive performance in the future.

“In the race for more performance, luxury, and innovation, Folgore is irresistible and it is the purest expression of Maserati. That’s why we decided to go back to racing in the FIA Formula E World Championship, meeting our customers in the city centres of the world, taking the Trident forward into the future.”

Maserati has had a long tradition in motorsports with Juan Manuel Fangio capturing the Formula One world championship in 1957 and Wilbur Shaw winning the Indianapolis 500 back-to-back in 1939 and 1940.

“We are proud to welcome Maserati to their new home in world-class motorsport,” added Formula E founder and chairman Alejandro Agag in the release. “The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship is the pinnacle of electric racing. It provides the perfect environment for the most dynamic and innovative high-performance car brands to showcase their technological capabilities alongside their sporting ambitions.”

Formula E is set to begin its eighth season Jan. 28-29 in Saudi Arabia and plans to return to Canada for the Vancouver ePrix on July 2.
