It’s been almost seven months since Canadian IndyCar driver Robert Wickens was in a life-threatening accident on the track, and while he’s far from driving again, he will be attending the 2019 season-opening race this weekend.
In a video announcement on his Twitter account, Wickens says he will be doing an autograph session at the first IndyCar race of the season in St. Petersburg, Fla., this Sunday.
“I am on way to St. Pete,” Wickens proudly announced in the video. “I can’t wait to just see everyone and be back at a race track.”
At a race last August at Pocono Speedway, Wickens was involved in a massive crash that saw his car spin into the fence and burst into flames. The 29-year-old from Guelph, Ont., was airlifted to hospital and suffered multiple injuries to his spine, legs and right arm in the crash.
Since then, Wickens has had multiple spine surgeries and is slowly learning to walk again at a rehab facility in Denver. His progress has been documented on social media, where fans saw in February that he had made a major breakthrough when he posted a video of him dancing with his fiancée on the six-month anniversary of the crash.
While it will be a long time before Wickens gets behind the wheel of a car again, it’s nice to see he hasn’t lost his love for racing.
