The Little League Baseball World Series is in full swing and while it is a competitive event, it also serves as a reminder of what sports can do to teach us life lessons.
A perfect example of this was seen in a Monday contest between a team from Italy and Oregon.
It’s the fifth inning with Italy up to bat. Oregon pitcher Isaiah Jensen just needs one more out to get out of the jam but fatigue has set in and he’s visibly struggling, looking as though his world’s going to end.
Then out of the dugout comes his coach, who also happens to be his father, Joel Jensen. What followed was one of the most touching father-son moments you’ll ever witness on a field of play.
Isaiah would end up striking out the next batter and his Oregon team would go on to win 6-2, all thanks to some solid coaching and even better fatherly advice.
If you’re not all that familiar with Little League Baseball, its mission statement reads as follows:
“Little League Baseball is a non-profit organization to help and voluntarily assist young boys and girls in developing the qualities of citizenship, discipline, teamwork and physical well-being through the medium of baseball and softball with guidance and exemplary leadership. By espousing the virtues of character, courage and loyalty, the Little League program is designed to develop superior citizens rather than superior athletes.”
Joel’s interaction with his son is a shining example of this and one to be followed. That’s how champions are truly made.
