HOUSTON — All-Star outfielder Hunter Pence and the Houston Astros have agreed to a US$3.5-million, one-year contract, more than seven times his $464,000 salary last season.
The 26-year-old was eligible for arbitration for the first time after hitting .282 with 25 homers and 72 RBIs.
He led major league outfielders with 16 assists.
Pence’s agreement Saturday was $100,000 under the midpoint of the $4.1 million he had asked for in arbitration and the $3.1 million he had been offered.
Two Astros remain in arbitration: pitchers Tim Byrdak and Wandy Rodriguez. Hearings are scheduled for next month.
