Bases Covered is a roundup of the most interesting stories in baseball. During the offseason, we take a look at the latest news and rumours around MLB.

The St. Louis Cardinals have expressed an interest in signing first baseman Chris Davis, according to Jon Morosi of FOX Sports. The 29-year-old free agent is repped by Scott Boras and has reportedly drawn the Cards’ interest because of his “ability to play first base, third base, right field and left field.”

Free agent starter Jeff Samardzija was seen meeting with Theo Epstein, the Chicago Cubs’ president of baseball operations, on Wednesday evening. Samardzija, who was drafted by the Cubs in 2006, went 11-13 in 32 starts for the White Sox last season, posting an ERA of 4.96.

Lind drawing interest from AL clubs
Adam Lind; Milwaukee Brewers; MLB
The Brewers are reportedly interested in moving veteran first baseman and former Blue Jay Adam Lind, who has one year left on his deal. Lind could be appealing to American League teams in need of a DH, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. Lind, 32, is ideally suited to a platoon situation; his numbers versus lefties are awful.

Bryce Harper can’t pronounce “meme”

Bryce Harper was named National League MVP on Thursday, and the voting was unanimous. So the 23-year-old Washington Nationals has a lot going for him. What he apparently lacks, though, is the ability to correctly pronounce the word “meme.” Harper, appearing on SportsCenter following his MVP win and looking delightfully out of touch, seems to think it’s pronounced “may-may.”

Bidding deadline extended for Ah-seop Son
mlb
The deadline for MLB clubs to bid on Korean outfielder Ah-seop Son has been pushed to Monday. Here’s a good piece by Yahoo’s Jeff Passan about a Korean Baseball Organization rule that prevents teams from accepting bids on two players in the same season. The rule could affect Son’s chances of soon making the leap to MLB, since his current team, the Lotte Giants, might earn more of a return by posting third baseman Jae-gyun Hwang, who’ll be a free agent next season.
