Anthony Kay has been scratched from Tuesday’s start against the Baltimore Orioles after the Toronto Blue Jays left-hander experienced soreness in his side.
Kay’s absence leaves manager Charlie Montoyo in a tough spot after 10 pitchers were used on Monday night in a 15-inning marathon win over the Orioles.
Kay, 24, was due to make his third MLB start and fourth appearance of the season.
He threw earlier Tuesday but the soreness was too much and Toronto decided to play it safe and rest him.
Kay has a 1-0 record and 5.79 earned-run average over 14 innings pitched this season for the Blue Jays along with 13 strikeouts.
The Stony Brook, N.Y., native was acquired from the New York Mets earlier this summer in a trade for right-hander Marcus Stroman.
