The Toronto Blue Jays are calling up shortstop Bo Bichette from triple-A Buffalo after a long awaited MLB debut for the top prospect, sources tell Sportsnet.

Bichette exited the Bisons’ game against the Durham Bulls in the third inning to handshakes from teammates, according to reporter Pat Malacaro.

The 21-year-old Bichette is the next top prospect to join Toronto this season after Vladimir Guerrero Jr., and Cavan Biggio were called up earlier in the year.

In 59 games at triple-A this season, Bichette is hitting .290 with eight home runs and 33 RBI.

The transaction comes just hours after the Blue Jays dealt utility player Eric Sogard to the Tampa Bay Rays. It wasn’t immediately clear what was coming back in the deal.

Bichette’s call-up to Toronto was delayed this season after he fractured a bone in his left hand during a game in April.

Bichette said as recently as two weeks ago that he had done everything the organization had asked him to do and was ready for a promotion.
