Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Josh Donaldson will begin a rehab assignment with single-A Dunedin Tuesday.
This development means Toronto would be able to place the slugger on waivers and potentially work out a trade by the end of the week. If he is to be moved, the transaction would have to be completed by Aug. 31, otherwise he would be ruled ineligible to participate in the post-season with his new club.
Donaldson has been limited to 36 games in 2018 due to a lingering calf injury. For the season, he is hitting .234/.333/.423 with five home runs and 16 RBIs. The 32-year-old last appeared in a major-league game on May 28.
The three-time all-star and 2015 American League MVP is set to become a free agent in the off-season.
