On the same night Toronto fans had to watch former Blue Jays stars Josh Donaldson and Edwin Encarnacion connect on back-to-back homers for their new team, the Cleveland Indians, the former organization managed to score at least one key win against the latter.

The two organizations’ double-A affiliates entered the third game of their Eastern League playoff series Friday night, and it was the Blue Jays’ next generation squad, the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, who emerged victorious against the Akron RubberDucks, claiming their first title in seven years with an 8-5 win.

New Hampshire went undefeated through the playoffs, putting up three straight wins against the Trenton Thunder in the semifinals followed by another three-game sweep against Akron in the finals.

With the win in tow, the Fisher Cats claim their first title since 2011, when they took down the Richmond Flying Squirrels in four games. The 2018 championship ranks as the organization’s fourth title overall, and their third since moving to New Hampshire from New Haven in 2004.
