Blue Jays’ Happ dealing with elbow inflammation; DL stint likely

Watch as Toronto Blue Jays starter J.A. Happ seems to injure himself on a pitch in the fifth inning.

TORONTO — Elbow inflammation may only cost Toronto Blue Jays left-hander J.A. Happ one start although he’s still likely land on the 10-day disabled list in order to cover the gap, according to an industry source.

The team planned to review all its information again Tuesday before making a final decision, not wanting to overreact to one initial exam after Happ felt what described as a “tug” in his elbow during his outing Sunday.

With the Blue Jays also expecting Aaron Sanchez to be out two weeks, they’re kicking around which two starters to recall from triple-A Buffalo to patch holes in the rotation Friday and Saturday at Anaheim.

Casey Lawrence, slated to start Tuesday for the Bisons, Mike Bolsinger, Jarrett Grube, T.J. House and Mat Latos are all under consideration.

Meanwhile slugger Josh Donaldson, on the disabled list with a right calf strain, is progressing well and could be back in 2-3 weeks, although the Blue Jays are reluctant to put any sort of timeframe on the matter.

The Silver Slugger third baseman is walking normally and doing strengthening exercises. He isn’t expected back during the Blue Jays’ upcoming road trip to Anaheim and St. Louis and it’s unclear for the moment if he’ll need a rehab assignment.

The Blue Jays open a three-game series against the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday night.
