Blue Jays’ Justin Smoak named AL player of the week

Justin Smoak talks about his two home runs against the New York Yankees and what it meant to split the series.

Toronto Blue Jays first basemen Justin Smoak had himself quite the weekend.

The slugger was honoured with his own bobblehead on Saturday, and his play on the field over the season’s first four games earned him the American League’s first player of the week award of 2018.

Smoak collected two home runs, seven total hits, eight RBIs and a .467 batting average in the four-game set with the New York Yankees. He connected for both homers in Sunday’s series finale, including the game-winning grand slam.

Washington Nationals outfielder Adam Eaton won the National League’s player of the week award.
