Blue Jays’ Lourdes Gurriel Jr. day-to-day with left side discomfort

Mark Shapiro explains that Public Health was responsible for leading the process of approval or finding concerns with the Toronto Blue Jays' home field, and that the team met every concern except for the one out of their control at the federal level.

Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. is listed as day-to-day with left side discomfort, the team announced Saturday.

Gurriel Jr. began experiencing the discomfort after catching a sacrifice fly in the first inning of Friday night’s intrasquad game. He has since shown improvement, according to the team, but is not yet ready to resume baseball activities.

The 26-year-old joined the team on Monday after an unexplained late arrival from Florida.

As Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi explained, Anthony Alford and Derek Fisher would likely fill in if Gurriel Jr. has to miss time, while Forrest Wall – who was acquired from Colorado for Seunghwan Oh in 2018 – could also be in line for some playing time.

In 84 games last season, Gurriel Jr. slashed .277/.327/.541 to go along with 20 home runs and 50 RBI.
