Lourdes Gurriel Jr., will miss the remaining five games of the Toronto Blue Jays‘ season after having his appendix removed.
The left-fielder was a late scratch from Toronto’s 11-10 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Monday, which the team initially called an illness.
Gurriel, 25, finishes a roller coaster season with a .277 batting average, 20 home runs and 50 RBI.
He started the year in the infield for the Blue Jays, but a series of throwing errors along with struggles at the plate landed him in triple-A Buffalo.
Gurriel refined his game in the minors and eventually was re-promoted before having success both offensively and defensively.
