Nate Pearson, the Toronto Blue Jays‘ 23-year-old pitcher whose powerful right arm makes him one of the sport’s most promising prospects, will make his big-league debut on Wednesday against the Washington Nationals.
Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo confirmed the news Monday night.
When Wednesday rolls around, Pearson will have spent five days off the major-league roster, meaning the most MLB service time he can accrue in 2020 will be 61 days.
Since 62 days are required for a player to accrue a full year of service time, Toronto will retain one extra year of club control.
Pearson split last year between class-A Dunedin, double-A New Hampshire and triple-A Buffalo. His longest run was at New Hampshire, where he was 1-4 with a 2.59 earned-run average in 16 starts, striking out 69 and walking 21.
