The Toronto Blue Jays will be optioning reliever Chris Smith to triple-A Buffalo to make room for Rule 5 pick Glenn Sparkman, manager John Gibbons said Thursday.
Smith was called up on Tuesday and hasn’t appeared in an MLB game this season.
Sparkman was claimed from Kansas City in December’s Rule 5 draft, but the 25-year-old broke his thumb in spring training.
The righty can reportedly hit the mid-90s with his fastball and last pitched on Wednesday for the Buffalo Bisons, earning a save with one inning of scoreless work.
He has never pitched in the majors.
