The Toronto Blue Jays have placed right-handed pitcher John Axford on the bereavement list and recalled left-handed pitcher Tim Mayza from triple-A Buffalo.
The 35-year-old Axford has a 2.70 ERA in 10 innings pitched so far this season.
In the 2.2 innings Mayza pitched this year for Toronto and Buffalo combined, he hasn’t allowed a run.
The Blue Jays will host the hot-hitting Boston Red Sox for three games at Rogers Centre beginning Tuesday night.
The Red Sox lead the American League East with a 17-4 record, and the Blue Jays trail them by four games in the division.
