DETROIT – Josh Donaldson hit the disabled list for the second time this season Friday, a bout of left calf tightness forcing him to the sideline just as some injured players rejoined the Toronto Blue Jays.
Left-handed pitcher Tim Mayza has been recalled from triple-A Buffalo to fill Donaldson’s spot on the lineup.
Shortstop Aledmys Diaz and outfielder Randal Grichuk were both activated from the DL earlier in the day with right-hander Jake Petricka and left-fielder Dwight Smith Jr., optioned to triple-A Buffalo to make room.
Donaldson did some tests pre-game Friday and the Blue Jays didn’t see the response needed to put him into the lineup. The decision to place him on the DL was made afterwards. His calf flared up Monday in Boston and the hope was two days off versus the Red Sox plus Thursday’s day off would allow him to make a quick return.
The star third baseman missed time earlier this season with right shoulder inflammation.
