The Toronto Blue Jays have placed starter Matt Shoemaker on the 10-day injured list with a left knee sprain. The 32-year-old is eligible to be reinstated on May 1.

Shoemaker has been terrific so far in his first season north of the border, pitching to a 3-0 record and 1.57 ERA through five starts in 2019.

The Blue Jays have called up Richard Urena from triple-A Buffalo ahead of Sunday’s matinee contest in Oakland to take Shoemaker’s spot on the 25-man roster.

The utility man has collected eight hits in 27 MLB at-bats this season.
