Steve Pearce became the latest member of the Toronto Blue Jays to hit the disabled list Monday, one day after leaving the field with a right calf strain.
Pearce exited Sunday’s game against the Seattle Mariners after his calf tightened up legging out a double in the second inning. He was slated to get an MRI on the muscle to determine the severity of the injury.
Right-handed reliever Leonel Campos took Pearce’s place on the active roster, while Ezequiel Carrera and Justin Smoak will likely be counted on to play every day at left field and first base, respectively.
Pearce started the season slowly, batting just .205/.256/.373 in 27 games, but he has been hitting better of late. He has hit all four of his home runs in May after going the entire month of April without an extra-base hit.
Josh Donaldson, Troy Tulowitzki, Russell Martin, J.A. Happ and Francisco Liriano are among the Blue Jays on the disabled list.
