Colby Rasmus is day-to-day following test results Saturday morning that indicated the centre-fielder is suffering from a mild groin strain.
Toronto Blue Jays manager John Farrell made the announcement following Saturday’s 5-2 loss to New York.
Rasmus was not in the Blue Jays lineup Saturday after re-aggravating a groin injury during Friday’s 10-4 loss to New York.
Farrell added he expects the 25-year-old outfielder to return to the lineup in a few days.
Rasmus originally suffered the injury back on Aug. 3 in Oakland. He sat out two games before returning to the lineup three days later vs. the Tampa Bay Rays.
Following Friday’s game, the Blue Jays optioned reliever David Carpenter to triple-A Las Vegas and recalled infielder/outfielder Mike McCoy.
ESCOBAR X-RAY NEGATIVE
Shortstop Yunel Escobar exited Saturday’s game in the eighth inning after being hit on the elbow by an errant Ivan Nova pitch.
It was the second time in the game Escobar had been plunked, prompting a warning to both warn teams by home plate umpire Jim Joyce.
Escobar was removed for precautionary reasons and his post-game X-rays came negative. He was spotted in the Blue Jays clubhouse following the game with his elbow heavily wrapped in ice.
MORROW’S NEXT START WILL BE…?
On Friday Farrell indicated that Brandon Morrow will make his next rehab start with the double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats on Monday.
There’s just one problem: The Fisher Cats have an off-day on Monday. On Saturday, Farrell corrected himself, indicating that Morrow will start on Tuesday instead.
Following Morrow’s outing, Farrell said the Blue Jays will determine whether he is ready to return to the big-league club or whether he still needs another start in the minors to build up his pitch count.
Morrow hasn’t made a start for Toronto since June 11 when he was forced to exit in the first inning after suffering oblique strain. At the time he was 7-4 with a 3.01 ERA and 1.004 WHIP with three shutouts in 13 starts.
In three minor league rehab starts between single-A Dunedin and double-A New Hampshire, Morrow has posted a 2.45 ERA and 1.364 WHIP to go with eight strikeouts and four walks in 11 innings.
