The Toronto Blue Jays have released a statement in the wake of the ensuing protests in the United States and beyond as a result of George Floyd’s death.
“We’ve been watching. We’ve been listening. We’ve been searching for the right words and struggled to find them. But we need to speak up,” the team’s statement read.
“Systemic racism, discrimination, and bigotry has taken too many lives. We stand with the Black Community. Enough is enough.
“Racism has no borders. The Toronto Blue Jays condemn prejudice in all its forms.
“Together, we must all take meaningful action, use our voices, and influence the change that is so desperately needed.”
Protests have continued across the U.S. following Floyd’s death on May 25 in Minneapolis. A number of athletes, teams and leagues have since spoken out against racial injustice, including former Blue Jays pitcher Marcus Stroman.
“Racism is thriving in America. That’s a fact,” Stroman wrote on Twitter. “If you choose to turn a blind eye towards it… you’re part of the problem that will continue to destroy this nation.”
