Brad Penny‘s pursuit of a roster spot with the Toronto Blue Jays is over as the veteran pitcher has decided to retire from baseball.
The 37-year-old, who signed a minor-league deal with Toronto this past December, struggled in three appearances this spring, allowing eight hits, three earned runs and two home runs in five innings.
Penny played in 349 MLB games across 14 seasons with the Miami Marlins, Los Angeles Dodgers, Boston Red Sox, San Francisco Giants, St. Louis Cardinals and San Francisco Giants.
In 1,925 career MLB innings, Penny went 121-101 with a 4.29 ERA, 1,273 strikeouts, 619 walks and 194 home runs allowed.
He last pitched in an MLB game with Miami in 2014, when he went 2-1 with a 6.58 ERA, 13 strikeouts, 13 walks and three home runs allowed in 26 innings.
