Blue Jays’ Vladimir Guerrero Jr. named AL player of the week

Blue Jays radio voice Ben Wagner joins Baseball Central to make sense of Vladimir Guerrero Jr.'s scheduled day off on Victoria Day, and the storm created by this decision on social media.

Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr., has been named the American League player of the week.

After a slow start to begin his major league career, the 20-year-old hit .333 with four home runs, nine RBIs, three walks and five runs scored over six games last week.

Guerrero’s week also included his first career multi-home run game when he clubbed two homers against the San Francisco Giants. He was the youngest American League player to accomplish the feat since Manny Machado in 2012.

Guerrero is also the youngest player in Blue Jays history to hit an MLB home run at 20 years, 59 days.

Toronto decided to rest him for their Monday afternoon game against the Boston Red Sox as it was a scheduled day of rest.
