The Atlanta Braves have said they’re interested in re-signing longtime starter Tim Hudson, but they are not expected to make the right-hander a qualifying offer by Monday’s 5 p.m. ET deadline, sportsnet.ca has learned.
Hudson’s season ended in July when he fractured his ankle covering first base. The 38-year-old posted a 3.97 ERA in 131.1 innings, striking out 95 hitters while walking 36.
Braves general manager Frank Wren said last month that he has interest in keeping Hudson, who hopes to play for two to three more seasons.
Teams must surrender a draft pick to sign players who decline $14.1 million qualifying offers. Most teams surrender a first-round pick to sign a free agent linked to draft-pick compensation, but the teams that finished with the worst 10 records in MLB surrender a second-rounder instead.
Catcher Brian McCann will obtain a qualifying offer from the Braves, an MLB source told sportsnet.ca. McCann is expected to decline the offer by November 11 and test the open market instead.
