The Atlanta Braves agreed to sign infielder Mat Gamel to a minor league contract, an industry source told Sportsnet. The former Milwaukee Brewers first baseman hit free agency earlier this month when the Chicago Cubs non-tendered him.
Gamel tore his ACL early in the 2013 season — the second consecutive campaign marred by an ACL injury. The former top prospect played for the Milwaukee Brewers for parts of five seasons before being claimed and then non-tendered by the Cubs. Gamel, who has 105 minor league home runs, has hit .229/.305/.367 at the MLB level.
