MILWAUKEE — Pitcher Chris Capuano stayed with the Milwaukee Brewers, agreeing to a minor-league contract Tuesday after the team let him go last week.
The left-hander became a free agent when Milwaukee failed to offer a contract by Friday’s deadline. That got him off the 40-man roster.
Capuano would get a US$500,000, one-year contract if added to the major-league roster. He could make $2,825,000 in performance bonuses, $1.2 million based on innings from 60 to 200, and $1,625,000 based on starts from five to 30.
Capuano had a $3.75-million salary last season.
Capuano missed last season after injuring his pitching elbow in an exhibition game in March. The 30-year-old decided to try rehabilitation rather than surgery but never returned.
Capuano won 18 games in 2005 and made the NL all-star team in 2006. He started 5-0 in 2007 but lost his last 12 decisions.
