MILWAUKEE — Left-hander Doug Davis and the Brewers are close to finishing a US$5.25-million, one-year contract to bring the former starter back to Milwaukee.

The deal will be finalized in the coming days, a person with knowledge of the talks told The Associated Press. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the deal hadn’t been completed.

The terms were earlier reported by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Davis will be guaranteed $4.25 million this season, and the deal includes a $6.5 million mutual option for 2011 with a $1 million buyout. With performance bonuses, Davis could make $12.75 million over the two years.

Davis pitched for Milwaukee from 2003-06, then was traded to Arizona. He was 9-14 with a 4.12 ERA last season.
