Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Lorenzo Cain has opted out of the 2020 season, team president David Stearns announced Saturday.
“Lorenzo Cain has informed us that he will not participate for the remainder of the 2020 season,” Stearns said in a statement. “We fully support Lorenzo’s decision, and will miss his talents on the field and leadership in the clubhouse.”
Cain appeared in five games for the Brewers, hitting .333/.429/.389 this season. The 34-year-old is in the third year of his five-year deal with Milwaukee that pays an annual salary this year of $16 million. He is not expected to receive pay or service-time credit for the rest of the season since he is not deemed high risk.
Milwaukee’s last two games against the St. Louis Cardinals were postponed because of multiple positive COVID-19 tests among St. Louis players and staff members.
