OTTAWA — Brett Lawrie and Adam Loewen highlight the Canada men’s roster for the IBAF Baseball World Cup.
Baseball Canada announced the 24-man roster Monday, which will be managed by Canadian Baseball Hall of Famer Ernie Whitt. One roster spot is still pending.
Second baseman Lawrie of Langley, B.C., the highest-drafted Canadian position player taken 16th overall by the Milwaukee Brewers in 2008, and former major league pitcher turned outfielder Loewen of Surrey, B.C., played with the team at the World Baseball Classic in March.
Also included from the WBC squad are: 3B Shawn Bowman of Port Moody, B.C., OF Adam Stern of London, Ont., RHP Chris Begg of Uxbridge, Ont., LHP Bryan Dumesnil of Nanaimo, B.C., and RHP Brooks McNiven of Vernon, B.C.
The roster also features: Iowa Cubs MVP and 2009 triple-A all-star C Chris Robinson of Dorchester, Ont., 1B/C Emerson Frostad of Calgary, LHP RJ Swindle of Vancouver, 1B/OF Jimmy Van Ostrand of Richmond, B.C., and OF Rene Tosoni of Coquitlam, B.C.
Canada starts the World Cup playing in Pool C Sept. 9 in Stockholm, Sweden.
