New York Yankees starting pitcher CC Sabathia had strong words for home plate umpire Ángel Hernández on Tuesday night, following an elimination loss to the Boston Red Sox.

“He’s absolutely terrible,” Sabathia told reporters, including Tim Healey of Newsday. “He was terrible behind the plate today. He was terrible at first base. It’s amazing how he’s getting jobs umpiring in these playoff games.

“I don’t understand why he’s doing these games,” Sabathia added. “It’s sad that he’s doing these games. It’s crazy.”

More CC Sabathia on Angel Hernandez: “He shouldn’t be anywhere near these playoff games.” “He’s bad. I don’t understand why he’s doing these games.” “It’s sad that he’s doing these games. It’s crazy.” “He’s always bad. He’s a bad umpire.

Sabathia allowed three runs on two walks and five hits over three innings against the Red Sox in the eventual 4-3 defeat. His criticism comes on the heels of Hernández missing three calls as first base umpire in Monday’s game. Those calls were overturned by replay challenges.

As well, the veteran hurler had issues with Hernández during a start earlier this season.

Red Sox right-hander Rick Porcello fared much better on the mound Tuesday, allowing just one run on four hits over five innings with no walks. When he got word of Sabathia’s comment, Porcello offered the following: “Throw the ball over the plate CC. I thought Ángel Hernández called a good game. You gotta out the ball over the white part of the plate and then you get the strikes called.”
