With the Dominican Republic claiming the 2013 WBC title, today’s Daily Gallery looks at some of the best moments from tournament.
The Dominicans were the first team to go on a perfect run at the WBC. There 8-0 record, however, isn’t that much of a surprise because the country had a selection pool of over 100 MLB players to choose from for the tournament.
The Dominicans were able to capture the WBC through solid pitching, timely hitting, and stellar defence like that exemplified by Miguel Tejada.
Fernando Rodney had a WBC to remember for the Dominicans. In addition to going perfect in save opportunities, Rodney also will be remembered for carrying his lucky plantain around in his pocket.
The WBC brings together many countries with diverse cultures. For example, team Japan bowed in unity to salute their Puerto Rican opponents after a semifinal matchup.
Perhaps the most memorable moment of the WBC is the brawl between Canada and Mexico in the first round.
And just because everybody loves a good baseball fight, here is another picture of the Canadiens and Mexicans exchanging pleasantries.
Coming into the tournament, the United States were considered one of the favourites to take home the title. However, the United States weren’t able to win despite having a roster filled with MLB all-stars.
"I still think about it and I still get chills," said Canada manager Ernie Whitt, who will handle skipper duties again this summer. (Ross D. Franklin/AP)
