SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — The Arizona Diamondbacks have released catcher Rod Barajas, a move that makes Wil Nieves the backup to starter Miguel Montero.

Barajas, a member of Arizona’s 2001 World Series championship team, was a non-roster invitee to the Diamondbacks this spring.

The 37-year-old Barajas was with the Diamondbacks from 1999 to 2003. He later played for Texas, Toronto, the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets and Pittsburgh.

Barajas has a career .235 average with 136 home runs and 480 RBIs.
