Mauro Gomez’s 29-home run season earned him a spot on a major-league roster, after all.
Gomez, who spent the 2013 season with the Toronto Blue Jays’ top affiliate, was claimed on waivers by the Washington Nationals Thursday. In need of 40-man roster space for September call-ups, Toronto designated Gomez for assignment Tuesday despite his power production.
Gomez, 28, hit 29 home runs and 21 doubles with an .843 OPS in 110 games for the triple-A Buffalo Bisons this year. The right-handed hitter has 37 games of experience with the Boston Red Sox.
The Nationals have not yet asked Gomez to report to the MLB level.
