TORONTO — The Toronto Blue Jays signed journeyman outfielder Dewayne Wise to a minor-league contract on Saturday and assigned him to extended spring training.
The 32-year-old spent four years in the Blue Jays system at the beginning of his career after he was plucked from the Cincinnati Reds as Rule 5 pick in 1999.
He played in 70 big-league games with the Jays, batting .172 with three homers and 13 RBIs.
Wise spent the past two seasons with the Chicago White Sox, where he batted .236 with eight homers and 29 RBIs in 141 games.
His signature moment in the Windy City was a brilliant catch he made to rob Gabe Kapler of a ninth-inning home run and preserve Mark Buehrle’s perfect game last year.
In 324 career games over parts of seven big-league seasons, Wise is a .216 hitter with 17 homers and 61 RBIs.
