Kevin Millar: Plate umpire handled Troy Tulowitzki poorly

Former major-leaguer Kevin Millar thought Troy Tulowitzki got a bit of a raw deal on Monday night.

In a guest appearance on Dean Blundell & Co. Tuesday morning, Millar admitted that umpire John Hirschbeck’s strikeout call on Tulowitzki in the sixth inning was correct, but took issue with his ejection of the Toronto Blue Jays shortstop during Game 3 of the ALCS.

“You’re the umpire. Turn around and face the stands,” Millar told hosts Dean Blundell, George Rusic, and Matt Stairs on Sportsnet 590 The Fan. “You can’t look for stuff like this. You can’t look to throw out the starting shortstop in an ALCS. I’m sorry. I don’t know what you can say. In my opinion, just turn away. Let’s just play baseball.”

Millar, who played 12 MLB seasons including one with Toronto, has thoroughly enjoyed the three playoff games between the Blue Jays and Kansas City Royals, who he called the two best teams in the league.

“It’s going to go to Game 7. These two teams will battle. (The) Royals aren’t going away easy, and (the) Blue jays are not a manufacturing club. They have to hit the homer and (do it) in Kansas City also. It’s a cat and mouse game… It’ll be an exciting series.”

Game 4 of the ALCS takes place Tuesday at the Rogers Centre. Kansas City leads the best-of-seven series 2-1.
