George Costanza once said, “When you look annoyed all the time, people think that you’re busy.”
Based on David Letterman and Jerry Seinfeld’s interactions with Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto, though, he’s got all the time in the world for his fans.
Well, maybe not everyone, but at least the A-listers. Exchanging stories about Votto on the Netflix show “My Next Guest Needs No Introduction,” Letterman first shared a story about how Votto was in the on-deck circle getting ready for his at-bat, when he turned to the section where former late night television host was seated and told them it would be his last appearance at the plate for the game.
Letterman was initially confused by the update, but then Votto went on to express his thanks to the fans for coming out to the ballpark.
It was then Seinfeld’s turn to express his excitement over the fact that Votto even knew who he was, telling a story about how Votto greeted him while warming up in the field near first base.
“Joey Votto turns to me and he goes ‘Hey Jerry, how are you doing?'” Seinfeld said. “And I just lept out of my skin, I was so excited. Joey Votto knows who I am!”
Both TV stars showed their human side and seemed touched by the exchange that reflected some of those good old Canadian niceties.
In typical Votto fashion, the Reds first baseman had some fun by giving his own version of the stories, stating that he confused Letterman with his limo driver and was actually talking to another friend named Jerry for Seinfeld’s story in a statement to The Athletic’s Trent Rosecrans.
I think we’ve all learned our lesson here. If Votto’s in the vicinity, he’ll probably be happier to see you than you think.
